🇺🇸 New York
A city that talks with its hands and feeds you at any hour.
A little history
New Amsterdam became New York. It has been a harbour, an immigrant door, a skyline argument, and a film set. The subway is older than it looks. Central Park was designed so the city would still have a countryside in the middle.
Things worth knowing
- There are more than 800 languages spoken. English is only the loudest.
- A “regular coffee” is not what you think it is. Ask kindly.
- The Statue of Liberty faces the sea, as a greeting.
- Yellow taxis are less common than they were. The attitude remains.
What they eat
A bagel with a schmear. Pizza folded. A deli sandwich that requires two hands and a plan. You can eat from the world without leaving a few blocks.
A local story
Everyone is from somewhere else, or their parents were. That is the local story: you arrive, you complain about the rent, you stay for the light on the water at the end of a street you did not know you would love.
A little more
New York is not only skyscrapers. It is a bagel, a stoop, a park bench, and a language made of interruptions. If you learn more, learn one neighbourhood name and sit with it. The rest of the city will still be there tomorrow.
