A little history

Lisbon was a port when Europe was learning the shape of the world. In 1755 an earthquake, a fire, and a wave knocked it down. They rebuilt on purpose: wider streets, a sensible square, a city that remembers it can be shaken and still set the table.

Things worth knowing

What they eat

Bacalhau is salted cod, cooked a thousand ways. Sardines in season perfume whole streets. A glass of ginjinha — sour-cherry liqueur — is a small welcome.

A local story

At dusk the light turns honey-coloured and someone, somewhere, is singing fado in a room that is too small for the feeling. You do not need to understand the words. The room understands them for you.
